That being said, when I load your previous images into Max, and render with scanline, with the transparency mapped into cutout, that seems to fix the overlapping, is that an acceptable workflow for you? My only other suggestion is to take the transparency map into an editing software, and edit the upper portion to be 100% opaque white, and fall into a gradient for the transparent black tips.
